AVID

What is AVID?

Advancement Via Individual Determination

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) prepares students so they can qualify for a four-year university study. With a proven track record in bringing out the best in students grades 4-12 and in closing the achievement gap, AVID targets students in the academic middle--B, C, and even D students--who want to go to college and are willing to work hard. These are students who are capable of completing rigorous curriculum but are falling short of their potential. Typically, AVID students will be the first in their families to attend college; many are from disadvantaged families. AVID pulls these students out of un-challenging courses and puts them on the college track, providing acceleration instead of remediation.

AVID is a full-year elective class offered to students in grades 7th and 8th who would like to prepare for accelerated high school classes and four-year universities. The curriculum features writing, inquiry, collaboration, note taking, study skills and college/career/motivational activities. Students participate in tutorials which assists them in their academic subjects. Students must commit to taking notes in subject-area classes on a daily basis. Other requirements include satisfactory citizenship, good attendance and an FSA Reading AND Math score of Level 3.
