Attendance Policy

Attendance Policy for Students

Students shall be counted in attendance if they are actually present at school at the time the attendance is taken or are away

from school on a school day and engaged in an educational activity that constitutes a part of the school-approved instructional

program for the student (Section 1003.23, Florida Statutes).

A student is expected

  • to be in school every day and on time in every class unless excused.
  • to bring appropriate material to all classes and be prepared to work.
  • to be responsible for obtaining and completing all assignments missed during an absence.
  • to deliver a parental note to the front office staff in the event of an absence (include Dr. statement if applicable).

 A parent is expected

  • to contact the school by phone each day of the student’s absence.
  • to send a note on the day the student returns to school specifying the date(s) and the reason(s) for the absence.

Failure on the part of the parent to follow these procedures will result in the student receiving an unexcused absence.

A. Students may not be absent from school without permission of the principal/designee.

       1. The school principal or designee is the only person authorized to excuse a student’s absence.

       2. A note from a parent/guardian is a request that a student’s absence be excused.

       3. When a student accumulates an excessive number of absences (5 days in a calendar month or 10 days within 90 calendar days) and additional absences occur which are caused by illness, a written statement from a physician verifying that the absence was caused by an illness may be required by the principal to be submitted by the parent/guardian (School Board Policy 4.16).

B. Habitual tardiness is defined as six (6) or more tardies to school or to an individual class per quarter. The School District seeks to locate and identify every qualified person with a disability ages 3 through 21. A free, appropriate education will be provided to students found eligible for Exceptional Education Services. No otherwise qualified individual with a disability shall, solely by reason of his or her disability, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subject to discrimination from any program or activity of the District. If you believe this policy has been violated, please contact a school-based Equity Coordinator or the Student Services Department at 337-8181.

C. For enforcement of compulsory school attendance, three unexcused tardies or unexcused early sign-outs may, at the discretion of the school principal, be considered equal to one day of absence.
